What Is Bingo in the NY Times Spelling Bee?

Bingo is a game that is played with small wooden balls and typically involves players calling out bingo numbers as they see them. The first player to call out all of the numbers wins the game.

In recent years, the game has been used as a way to test contestants’ spelling skills.

In the NY Times Spelling Bee, contestants are given a list of words and are asked to spell them. If they can spell the word, they mark it off their list. If they can’t spell it, they are given a bingo card with one or more bingo symbols on it.

They are then asked to spell the word and if they get a bingo symbol, they can add it to their list. The player with the most marked-off words at the end of the game wins.
