What Was the Original Name for Bingo?

Bingo is a classic game that is enjoyed by many. The game is thought to have originated in China around 600 AD. The original name for the game was “bao”, which means “to hit”. In modern English, the word “bingo” most closely corresponds to the Cantonese pronunciation of the word “bao”.

The modern version of the game is usually played with 54 cards, but variants exist using any number of cards. Bingo is usually played with a ball and a number of callers who call out numbers. When a caller calls out a number, all players must place their balls on the number called out. The first player to fill their cup with balls wins the game.
