Why Are There Blanks on Bingo Cards?

There are blank spaces on bingo cards because the game was once played with a different number of cards.

The traditional 52-card deck used in most games of bingo consisted of four jokers, which made it easier for players to know how many points they had in a given category.

In 1980, the American Bingo Association (ABA) introduced the modern bingo card with 56 cards – four fewer than the traditional deck. The reasoning behind this reduction was that it made it harder for players to predict the outcome of a game, as well as making it more difficult to cheat.

As a result, many traditional bingo clubs have switched back to using the traditional 52-card deck. The ABA has since updated their standards to allow for either version of the game, so there is no definitive answer as to which is better.
