What Country Did Bingo Come From?

Bingo is thought to have come from India, where it was called bhangra. The first documented reference to bingo is from 1796, and it was played in India as part of religious ceremonies. In 1876, Charles Dicken popularized the game in England when he wrote about a group of people playing bingo in a work called “The Pickwick Papers”. Bingo was first played in the United States in the early 1800s, and it became popular there during the Prohibition era.

In 1932, Charles Doolittle created the first electronic bingo machine, which helped make the game more widespread. The modern game of bingo is played with paper and pencils on a rectangular board with 54 squares.
